Chief David Povero
The City of Covina is a special place that many people call home. Whether one lives, works or plays in Covina, community members have devoted themselves to making it a great place to thrive.
Chief Povero has strong ties with the Covina community. Back in 1988, he started his employment with the City of Covina as an overnight parking enforcement officer. He later attended the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Basic Police Academy in 1989 and returned to Covina as a Police Officer in 1990. Chief Povero has extensive experience in field and investigative operations, serving eight years as a detective handling complex crimes. He progressed through the leadership ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain. In his ten years as Operations Captain, Povero had been responsible at times for the entire department operations which include both the fifty-eight sworn personnel and forty-eight professional staff. Through his career, Chief Povero has participated in numerous specialized assignments in Administration, Patrol, Investigations, Professional Standards, Recruitment, Crime Prevention and Special Response and Area Response Teams.
Chief Povero’s approach to problem-solving is to methodically gather facts, evaluate information and form a response that is focused on meeting the needs of the community. He leads the members of the Covina Police Department who are exceptional men and women that accomplish great things through passion, not position. Chief Povero encourages CPD employees to engage all the community stakeholders in a collaborative approach in community policing and policing reforms. His ultimate goal is to enhance the overall performance of the Department, ensuring that the community is well served.
Chief Povero was raised in Covina, attending all the local schools including Covina High School; GO Colts! David holds a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership from Azusa Pacific University. He is a graduate of the Robert Presley Institute of Criminal Investigations and the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute. Chief Povero is also a graduate of California’s Peace Officers Standards & Training Command College; published for his research of investigative techniques involving technology.
Chief Povero is the recipient of the 1998 Covina Chamber of Commerce Police Officer of the Year award, Medal of Merit and Distinguished Service Medal. He has received numerous citations for exemplary service, including the department’s highest Medal of Valor for an officer involved shooting that occurred in the early 1990s. Outside of work, David enjoys travel, cooking, spending time with his family, friends and Maximus, his Weimaraner.
